South East Asian Stone Elephant Funerary Idol
4TH-3RD CENTURY B.C. OR LATER
4 3/8 in. (481 grams, 11.3 cm).
A rhyolite idol with zoomorphic head, low-relief facial features, including a trunk which is pierced latitudinally; traces of red pigment. [No Reserve]

In the mid 15th century a freighting junk loaded with fine Vietnamese pottery sank in an area of the South China Sea called the 'Dragon’s Embrace.' This vessel is part of the shipwreck cargo recovered off the coast of Vietnam at Hoi An. The ceramics themselves were probably made in the area of Chu Dau. -

Comprising: a stoneware water dropper in the form of a toad, legs with incised decoration applied to the globular body, the opening flanked by two loop handles, the bottom unglazed; the second one in the exceptional and rare form of a monkey, aperture for filling on the top and nicely crackled green glaze, unglazed bottom. 742 grams total, 10-14 cm
