THAILAND, 14TH-16TH CENTURY A.D. OR LATER

8 in. (1.34 kg, 20.3 cm wide).

Squat in profile with domed nozzle and stub spout, tall neck with disc finial; linear bands dividing the surface into floral panels and other motifs. [No Reserve]

From the private collection of a Canadian gentleman living in Essex, UK, formed since the 1920s-circa 1990.
Property of an Essex lady until the late 1990s; thence by descent.

    In the mid 15th century a freighting junk loaded with fine Vietnamese pottery sank in an area of the South China Sea called the 'Dragon’s Embrace.' This vessel is part of the shipwreck cargo recovered off the coast of Vietnam at Hoi An. The ceramics themselves were probably made in the area of Chu Dau.

    Square in plan with low L-shaped feet, domed lid; hatched fields with reserved vegetation motifs; inner face and lid with neat columns of pointillé text; the lid reading is a dedication to Mr Wong by his son and grandchildren; the base reading: 'Born 22nd January 1723, approximately 11pm (Lunar = Renyin Year of the Kangxi reign.) - Passed away 7th January 1808, approximately 3-5pm. (Lunar = Wuchen year of the Jiaqing reign.) - Laid to rest in Meizhok County - Burial direction: Southeast (Xun direction) aligned slightly eastwards. East (Mao direction) by three degrees. 332 grams, 95 x 95 mm
