South East Asian Sandstone Head of the God Shiva

13 3/4 in. (15.2 kg total, 35 cm including stand).
Carved with the hair piled in a column on top of the head and secured with a ring and figural plaque; narrow mouth with moustache above; mounted on a custom-made stand. [No Reserve]

Square in plan with low L-shaped feet, domed lid; hatched fields with reserved vegetation motifs; inner face and lid with neat columns of pointillé text; the lid reading is a dedication to Mr Wong by his son and grandchildren; the base reading: 'Born 22nd January 1723, approximately 11pm (Lunar = Renyin Year of the Kangxi reign.) - Passed away 7th January 1808, approximately 3-5pm. (Lunar = Wuchen year of the Jiaqing reign.) - Laid to rest in Meizhok County - Burial direction: Southeast (Xun direction) aligned slightly eastwards. The Tek Sing (True Star) wreck is one of the famous recovery stories of the 20th century. Sailing from the port of Xiamen (then known as Amoy) in February 1822 the vessel Tek Sing was bound for Jakarta, Indonesia laden with porcelain goods and 1600 Chinese emigrants. The captain decided to pass through the Gaspar Strait, between the Bangka-Belitung Islands, and ran aground on a reef. The vessel sank in about 100 feet of water. The next morning, February 7, an English East Indiaman captained by James Pearl, passing through the same waters, encountered debris and some survivors and managed to rescue about 190 of the latter. -
