Seleucis and Pieria, Antioch AE 20mm. Dated year 44 of the Actian Era (AD 13/14). Q. Caecilius Metellus Creticus Silanus, legatus Augusti pro praetore. Pseudo-autonomous issue.
Laureate head of Zeus to right / EΠI ΣIΛANOY ANTIOXEΩN, ram running to right, head to left; star above, ΔM (date) below. RPC I, 4269; McAlee 99. Good Fine.(7.28gr, 20mm, 12h.).

It has been suggested that such Greek lead test strikes were made by itinerant engravers in an effort to sell their services to cities that produced coins, much like modern coin patterns, which are made by artists to help officials visualise a coin before it is approved for production. -
