Scandinavian Viking Equal-Arm Brooch
9TH CENTURY A.D.
3 in. (21.5 grams, 79 mm).
A bronze equal-arm brooch of Aargård Type III A, with central lozenge, symmetrical scooped flanges with low-relief geometric ornament and trefoil finial, raised circular sockets, remains of ferrous pin to the reverse with lugs and catch, copper-alloy suspension ring attached to a loop to one pierced socket. [No Reserve]

Acquired before 1960.
From the family collection of a UK gentleman, by descent in the early 1970s.

A substantial bronze seax (battle-knife) pommel comprising a flat oval-shaped top, narrow rim and four vandykes to the edges; the upper face with an incuse cruciform knot design, the edge with reserved spirals and guilloche motifs in Ringerike Style. 27.5 grams, 31 mm

The style of the decoration suggests an Anglo-Scandinavian source for the pommel.
