SAXON GERMANIC GILDED IRON SPANGENHELM CHEEK PIECE
(Gilt iron, 46 grams, 14 cm.).

Circa mid-6th century AD. An iron cheekpiece from a Spangenhelm with punched scale decoration, gilded; to the edge a series of circular holes for the leather thong binding.

PROVENANCE:
Property from the collection of Axel Klausen; formerly in a private German collection; found outside of Krefeld, Germany in 1962.

FOOTNOTES:
Similar to the cheekplates on the princely helmet from Morken, Germany.
