Saxon Cruciform Bow Brooch
6TH CENTURY A.D.
4 3/8 in. (32.1 grams, 11 cm).
A bronze cruciform brooch comprising a rectangular headplate with trapezoidal lateral panels, collared knop above, punched pellets to the outer edges, relatively shallow bow, slender footplate with scrolled lappets, transverse ribbing, beast-head finial with trefoil muzzle; pin-lugs and catchplate to reverse.

Footnotes
The brooch is rather more dainty than the majority of the cruciform types, with a thin bow and small catch to the reverse.

The item began as one of a set of pin-heads for the headdress of a high-status female. Subsequently the edge was pierced in two places and a rivet passed through one hole - if the other hole also accepted a rivet it has been lost. The floral decoration terminates in narrow triangular vine-leaf motifs which appear elsewhere in Trewhiddle Style art. -

A bronze cruciform brooch comprising a rectangular headplate with trapezoidal flanking panels and three radiating squares with pairs of addorsed bird-heads; deep bow with domed centre; footplate flanked by annular lappets; horse-head foot with raised points for the eyes and discoid nostrils; pin-lug and catch to the reverse; repaired, a marriage. 57 grams, 13 cm
