Satsuma Lidded Gilt Ceramic Box
EARLY 20TH CENTURY A.D.
2 1/2 in. (56 grams, 63 mm wide).
Discoid in plan, squat bowl with basal ring, shallow lid with central knop handle; lid with dense gilt scheme of busts and patterned clothing; sidewall with dragons; inside lid, two gilt scholars with a scroll, inside bowl a crouching scholar. [No Reserve]

Budai was a 10th-century monk, known for his laughing face and round stomach, and was named after the cloth sack that he carried under his arm. Buddhists believe him to be the incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha, who helps common people in the mortal world.
