Russian Orthodox Icon with Christ Pantocrator

19TH CENTURY A.D.

10 1/4 x 8 5/8 in. (436 grams, 26.3 x 22 cm).

On a wooden board with elaborate riza, nimbate Christ shown facing and holding an open book on his lap, the right hand raised and making the sign of blessing; by Jacob & Co in Moscow; printing to the lower edge of the brass panel states "PRINTING IS APPROVED BY THE MOSCOW RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE DECEMBER 6 DAY 1896 YEAR. CENSOR ARCHPRIEST ALEXANDER SMIRNOV. A JACOB&C MOSCOW." [No Reserve]

    Octagonal in plan with carved scene of the Adoration of the Magi with star above; stepped border, pierced for attachment. 30.2 grams, 68 mm



    Acquired in the mid 1980s-1990s. Private collection, Switzerland, thence by descent. Private collection, since the late 1990s.

    The flat relief and the stylistic refinement of the images place the execution of the plaque towards the end of the 17th century, with some artistic parallels with the Romanian silversmiths of Chiprovatzi.
