Russian Orthodox Enamelled Bronze Travel Icon with Saints Boris and Gleb

Saint Boris and Saint Gleb depicted on horseback wearing Russian medieval armour, holding a cross standard and a sword, each wearing a conical helmet; on the right upper corner, the hand of God.

FootnotesBoris and Gleb were the sons of Vladimir of Kyiv, the first Christian Prince of Rus; they were killed in 1015 and 1019 in the civil struggles for the succession to the throne, and sanctified for their faith. Standards with their image were worn by the medieval Russian army.

The elaborate openwork pendant set with old-cut diamonds, the hanger centred with a table-cut diamond; at the centre a circular glazed compartment containing a Greek Orthodox, micro-sandalwood carving of the Holy Trinity, featuring three elaborately carved nimbate figures; the reverse of the pendant with a flowering tulip; a brooch pin added in the 19th century to the reverse. 31.97 grams, 66 mm

This small-scale portrait evokes the Roman tradition of imperial portraiture and the early modern fascination with the ancient world. From the seventeenth century onwards, artists and collectors revived classical subjects through hardstone and gilt-metal compositions, often intended for display in Kunstkammer or Grand Tour contexts. The combination of a reused ancient or earlier element with a later mount was a practice typical of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, reflecting the period’s reverence for antiquity and its imaginative recontextualisation of ancient forms. -
