Romano-Pannonian Bronze Ring with Ring-and-Dot Design

2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.

7/8 in. (3.51 grams, 22.85 mm overall, 18.61 mm internal diameter (approximate size British N, USA 6 1/2, Europe 13.72, Japan 13)).

Flat-section hoop with a raised circular bezel with a ring-and-dot motif, a pair of incuse ring-and-dot motifs on each shoulder. [No Reserve]

Acquired on the UK and EU art market before 2000.
From the private collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman.

Footnotes

Romano-Pannonian rings of the 3rd century A.D. were characterised by a small circular bezel with wide, sloping shoulders and a fairly thick hoop. The dots decorating them were often filled with enamel.

    Rings of these typologies seem to have been manufactured in Britain, and are characterised by decorative mouldings on the hoop. Sometimes the broad elements of the hoop had a decorative setting soldered to it.

    American private collection, acquired in the 1980s-1990s. Acquired on the American art market in 2016. with Sotheby's, London, 11 December 2020, no.88. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.13078-249667.

    Both the stance and folds of the himation suggest an Archaistic statue, perhaps the goddess Isis.
