Romano-British 'Colchester' Decorated Terracotta Vase
2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.
6 1/8 in. (530 grams, 15.5 cm).
Black burnished ware jar with narrow foot, bulbous body with broad shoulder and flared rim to the mouth; circumferential band of rouetting to the shoulder; Type BB2; repaired.
Provenance
Discovered during renovations of Williams and Griffin, Colchester, Essex, UK, circa 1980s.
Published
Exhibited at the Harwich Museum, Harwich, Essex, UK, 8th June 2026-14th September 2026; accompanied by a copy of a photograph of the artefacts on display.

Also known as Lapis Lacedaemonius and Porfido Verde Antico, a type of green porphyry quarried in Greece. Spartan basalt is a form of andesite or volcanic rock known today only from a single source in the village of Krokees on the Peloponnese in Greece. In addition, ancient sources mention a quarry of Lapis Lacedaemonius in Taygetus.
