Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp with Rampant Stag
2ND CENTURY A.D.
4 in. (81 grams, 10.3 cm).
Discoid in plan with stub heart-shaped nozzle, loop handle with ribbing to outer face, shoulder with low-relief wreath detailing, discus with stag running right; ropework bands to underside of nozzle, base marked off with two circular grooves, impressed 'C' to centre.
ProvenanceFrom a Scottish gentleman’s collection, Glasgow, formed from the early 2000s.

Rings of these typologies seem to have been manufactured in Britain, and are characterised by decorative mouldings on the hoop. Sometimes the broad elements of the hoop had a decorative setting soldered to it.
