Roman Silver Ring with Standing Figure
CIRCA 3RD-4TH CENTURY A.D.
5/8 in. (1.86 grams, 17.85 mm overall, 16.54 x 13.66 mm internal diameter (approximate size British H 1/2, USA 4, Europe 6.81, Japan 6)).
Flat-section hoop and discoid bezel, incuse noched border enclosing a standing figure (perhaps Victory) holding a staff with a second staff to its rear, flanked by laurel leaves; chipped. [No Reserve]
ProvenanceFrom the private collection of Mr Brian Edwards, New Malden, Surrey, UK, formed from the late 1970s-early 1980s; thence by descent.

Roman Fresco Wall Plaster Collection

Fragments of wall plaster with rendered surface painted with mainly Pompeii red, pale blue, brown and cream detailing; some with an impression of timber laths to the reverse. 673 grams total, 6.3-11.3 cm
Acquired in the 19th century. Ex Jeger collection, Switzerland. UK gallery, early 2000s.
These small fragments, for analogies with the fragments of Pompeii, seem to belong to the second style of Roman painting, red panels representing highlight and shadow, decorated with vegetal interlaces. A red grenade fillet probably framed some panels. A fragment shows alternate blue and red colours over a cream background, maybe pertinent to a socle. -
