A similar object formed part of the remarkable hoard of late Roman gold jewellery and silver tableware found near Thetford, Norfolk, in 1979. -
Roman Orange Jasper Gemstone with Scorpion

It is possible that the intaglio was once part of a ring carried by a Praetorian guardsman, as the scorpion was one of their emblems.
