Bulbous body with a dimple base, tubular neck with a trefoil mouth and a strap handle to the rear.

With an elliptical body, short neck and thick everted rim, with modelled wrinkles imitating the texture of a dried date. 16.22 grams, 78 mm
Acquired from Millennium Antiquities, Lancashire, UK, in 2001. From the collection of a Bedfordshire, UK lady. Accompanied by an original Millennium Antiquities invoice dated 28 June 2001.
Dates were not only a staple of the Mediterranean diet, used to sweeten food and wine, but also a symbol for the New Year and a fruit often given as a gift on the occasion. -
Roman Gold Ring with Greek Boar Gem

Hollow-formed and widening at the shoulders to a high elliptical bezel set with a black and white banded glass intaglio imitating striped sardonyx, depicting a running boar in profile on a baseline; Greek letters KΠ on the surface under the boar; supplied with a museum-quality impression. 1.93 grams, 22.40 mm overall, 15.77 mm internal diameter (approximate size British J, USA 4 3/4, Europe 8.69, Japan 8)

The motif and style, a running boar with a tube-like body, seem to fit into Boardman's Wyndham Cook Group, and could be ascribed to the Graeco-Persian period, despite the fact that the gemstone was later incorporated into a Roman ring. -
