Roman Hematite Gnostic Gemstone with Chnoubis

2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.

5/8 in. (1.82 grams, 15 mm).

Incuse lion-headed serpent facing right with radiate head of 14 rays and a nimbata; body marked by deep, parallel scales in two coils; crescent moon and a star in the field; supplied with a museum-quality impression.

Acquired on the European art market.
Private collection, England.

This magical jewel referenced solar worship and ancient Egyptian astronomy. Rare.

    Acquired on the UK and EU art market before 2000. From the private collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman.

    The 'Brancaster' type ring was a product of the late 4th to early 5th centuries. Although no exact parallel for the engraved design could be found, the design depicts mythical animals. A late Roman finger ring from Havering, Essex, exhibits an engraved glass gem depicting Bellerophon slaying the chimaera.
