Roman Glass Inlay, Bead and Fragment Group
1ST-4TH CENTURY A.D.
3/8 - 3/4 in. (5.48 grams total, 9-20 mm).
A group of millefiori and lampwork beads and fragments, comprising: a polychrome mosaic glass fragment with leaf decoration and a banded yellow rim; a white mosaic glass inlay with red and black floral motifs; an oblate bead with 'eye' motifs; a turquoise-coloured thick inlay of four fingers with white nail detailing; a blue and a yellow shoe-shaped fragment with applied bosses. The portrait is of an idealised feminine head, probably modelled on an Aphrodite type, with the hair in a bun on the nape, adorned with circles and with a tuft knotted at the top of the forehead, re-used as a portrait of a Roman lady. Many statue types were used both for portraits of women of the imperial family and for the portraits of other women, some of them based on images of goddesses.
