Roman Glass Flask

Large ring with round-section hoop and a raised plain bezel. 8.29 grams, 26.69 mm overall, 21.01 x 18.98 mm internal diameter (approximate size British T 1/2, USA 9 3/4, Europe 21.89, Japan 21)



From the old family collection of a West Country, UK, lady; acquired by descent from her grandfather circa 2001.

Fragments of wall plaster with rendered surface painted with mainly Pompeii red, pale blue and white detailing; some with impression of timber laths to the reverse. 601 grams total, 4.5-10.6 cm

These small fragments, for analogies with the fragments of Pompeii, seem to belong to the second style of Roman painting, red panels representing highlight and shadow, decorated with vegetal interlaces. Some panels were probably framed by a red grenade fillet. A fragment shows alternate blue and red colour over a cream background, maybe pertinent to a socle.

Including Mercury seated with marsupium, a robed female figure, a boy beating a tree to dislodge fruit, Neptune with trident and other types; each supplied with a museum-quality impression. 5.46 grams total, 8-17 mm
