Roman Gilt Bronze Plate Brooch with Blue Eagle Intaglio

CIRCA 2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.

1 1/4 in. (13.8 grams, 31.7 mm).

Discoid plate brooch with concentric rings to the tondo, central cell with blue glass insert, intaglio image of a bird with one wing raised and head reversed; pin-lug and catch to reverse. [No Reserve]

From an old West Country, UK, collection, sold at auction.
From the private collection of a West Midlands lady collector.

    These small fragments, for analogies with the fragments of Pompeii, seem to belong to the second style of Roman painting, red panels representing highlight and shadow, decorated with vegetal interlaces. Some panels were probably framed by a red grenade fillet. A fragment shows alternate blue and red colour over a cream background, maybe pertinent to a socle
