ROMAN GEMSTONE WITH VICTORY CROWNING CERES
1ST CENTURY A.D.
3/4 in. (2.73 grams, 20 mm).

Ellipsoid intaglio insert with seated female figure beside an altar and holding a staff or spear, to her rear standing figure of Victory, winged and holding a wreath over the head of the seated figure.

PROVENANCE:
From the collection of a gentleman, acquired on the London art market in the 1990s.
This lot is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D'Amato.

LITERATURE:

FOOTNOTES:
Some gems, such as one held in the Cornell Collection of Antiquities, show the goddess Victoria crowning another goddess, such as Ceres (goddess of agriculture) or Fortuna. The crowned goddess is holding a horn of abundance in her left hand.
