Roman Fresco Wall Plaster Collection

2 5/8 - 4 7/8 in. (786 grams total, 6.7-12.5 cm).
Fragments of wall plaster with rendered surface painted with mainly Pompeii red, pale blue, cream and white detailing; some with an impression of timber laths to the reverse. [5, No Reserve]

Acquired in the 19th century.

Footnotes
These small fragments, for analogies with the fragments of Pompeii, seem to belong to the second style of Roman painting, red panels representing highlight and shadow, decorated with vegetal interlaces. A red grenade fillet probably framed some panels. A fragment shows alternate blue and red colours over a cream background, maybe pertinent to a socle.

The Romans first encountered elephants in Pyrrhos' army, and the representation of elephants in Roman Art begins from this period. Victorious Emperors like Caesar and Vespasian celebrated elephants on their coins. Apart from the celebration of elephants as ‘war machines’, the image of elephants was linked to other aspects in the Roman Imperial Period. Before becoming emperor, Elagabalus was one of the priests of Helios-Sun worship in Emesa. He had elephant depictions on his coins during his reign. The elephants raise their heads to the sun when the sun rises. Thus, sun is represented on the gemstone together with the elephant. -
