Roman Ceramic Campana Relief

MID-1ST CENTURY BC-EARLY 2ND CENTURY AD

14 1/4 x 11" (4.7 kg, 36 x 28 cm).

A Campana relief sculpture of Victory sacrificing a bull, wings spread behind her, kneeling with her left leg between the shoulders and holding the animal's jaws in her left hand; delivering the death-blow with a knife held vertically in her right hand; traces of red colour in the hair; mounted on a red plaster board.

Provenance

Ex Levett Collection, Musée d’Art Classique de Mougins, France; ex Dr. Fritz Reinert Collection, Wien (1912-1996), compiled in the 1930s.
