Roman Bronze Statuette of the God of Mercury
1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
3 3/4 in. (89.8 grams, 95 mm).
Modelled standing nude in contrapposto stance, wearing a mantle draped to the left shoulder and secured at the right, wearing winged petasos cap, standing on a rectangular base.

UK private collection before 2000.
Acquired on the UK art market.
Property of a London gentleman.

In Kent, nearby Dover, there is the site of a Roman villa located in a field named The Vineyards. The site was excavated in 1881-82 during which time a hypocaust, tessellated pavement, bath house and a quern were found. The hypocaust was dated to two periods and a quern was found on a tessellated pavement. -

Of early type with lemon-shaped knop above the round-section crossbar, facetted bow with filigree coils to the lower end, D-section footplate with lateral chamfered edges and catchplate to reverse, hinged pin behind the crossbar. 13.9 grams, 60 mm
