Modelled in the round with naturalistic detailing to the head and face, sitting with head turned slightly to the left.

Set in a silver mount with beaded edge; the intaglio depicting Demeter draped, advancing left and holding ear of corns in her right hand. 2.21 grams, 19 mm
Acquired in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Important North West London collection.
Demeter and Hecate were linked to the afterlife cult, so it is possible that the ring to which the bezel belonged was a funerary gift. Demeter (Ceres for the Romans) was the Greek goddess of the harvest, the cycle of life and death and sacred law. -

Roman Carnelian Gemstone with Serapis and Eagle Between Two Military Standards

The oval intaglio with bust of Serapis right, above an eagle with wings spread, two military signa to the sides. 0.87 grams, 17 mm
Acquired in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Important North West London collection.
Often the intaglio gemstones were carved with an eagle between two standards. The left standard is topped with a capricorn genius legionis, and the right one with the hand of a signum manipularis. The presence of a capricorn could imply that the gemstone was dedicated to men of the Legio XIIII Martia Victrix.
