Roman Bronze Phalera with Figures
1ST-4TH CENTURY A.D.
4 in. (14.3 grams, 10 cm).
Sheet-bronze plaque with raised border and four piercings, central repoussé frieze of a bearded figure with a staff advancing on a baseline before a second such figure holding the hand of a female with neck-ring, stripped to the waist.

Acquired on the London art market in the late 1980s-1990s.

This item is part of a common type of storage and packing bottles used in the early Imperial centuries. The heavy glass wall provided durability, and the square shape of such bottles made it easy to ship. Use of such bottles for packaging has been confirmed by finds from Herculaneum. -
