Roman Bronze Mouse Nibbling a Nut Statuette
1ST-4TH CENTURY A.D.
1 1/8 in. (11.9 grams, 29 mm).
Modelled with naturalistic detailing on all fours nibbling at a nut held between the forepaws, tail curled upwards.
Provenance‘The Ancient Menagerie Collection’ formerly the property of a Cambridgeshire lady, collected since the 1990s and acquired from auctions and dealers throughout Europe and the USA, now ex London collection.

Aesclepius (Latin Esculapius) was the god of the health and protector of doctors. The serpent‐wreathed rod is well detailed, a rendition which finds a direct parallel in a carnelian intaglio in Carnuntum, Austria. -
