Roman Bronze Millefiori Plate Brooch
2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.
1 7/8 in. (10 grams, 48 mm).
With a lozenge-shaped body decorated with a ring-and-dot lug to each corner, suspension loops to each side of two of the lugs; tiered face embellished with small millefiori floral motifs on a royal blue background surrounding a lighter coloured central disc; pin lugs and partial pin to the reverse.

The many statuettes of Mercury found in France and Italy offer many variations: Mercury is sometimes entirely naked, recalling the models of the 4th century B.C., but much more often he wears a paenula or a chlamys rolled up on his left arm. His head can be uncovered, adorned with two wings or covered by the petasos.
