Roman Bronze Bird Brooch
MID 2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.
1 5/8 in. (7.9 grams, 42 mm).
Mackreth's Type 4.a.2 zoomorphic brooch in the form of a water bird, with folded wings and tail outlined with dots, transverse bands to the rear body, remains of a catchplate and pin lug to the reverse. [No Reserve]
ProvenanceFound whilst searching with a metal detector near Bottisham, East Cambridgeshire, UK, on Friday 13th December 2024.
Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.SF-9DEECA.

From the right end of an ornate sarcophagus, carved dramatic theatrical mask in the centre with open mouth and drilled eyes, the forehead morticed for an attachment, a garland of leaves below; the right end tied to a boukranion, the left supported by a winged Eros; reverse with apsidal recess. 72.95 kg, 48 x 57 cm

Flat-section hoop with a raised circular bezel with a ring-and-dot motif, a pair of incuse ring-and-dot motifs on each shoulder. 3.51 grams, 22.85 mm overall, 18.61 mm internal diameter (approximate size British N, USA 6 1/2, Europe 13.72, Japan 13)
Acquired on the UK and EU art market before 2000. From the private collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman.
Romano-Pannonian rings of the 3rd century A.D. were characterised by a small circular bezel with wide, sloping shoulders and a fairly thick hoop. The dots decorating them were often filled with enamel.
