Roman Vessel with Actor's Mask Handle

A squat jar in lead-rich copper-alloy with concentric rings to the base, bulbous body, trefoil mouth with egg-and-dart detailing, strap handle with vine-leaf detailing, actor's mask at the lower end and a lion's head with open mouth at the other. 695 grams, 13.2 cm
Acquired on the Swiss art market, 2001. Private European collection. Accompanied by an academic report by Dr Raffaele D'Amato. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.12586-232162.
This type of vessel (spouted jugs with trefoil mouth) was part of Roman and provincial bronze instrumentum domesticum, i.e. culinary or domestic utility ware. The typology was assigned by H.U. Nuber to the E type (Millingen type), pieces characterised by a trefoil, highly splayed rim, a short neck and usually a spherical body. -

Fragments of wall plaster with rendered surface painted with mainly Pompeii red, pale blue, brown and white detailing; some with an impression of timber laths to the reverse. 868 grams total, 79-98 mm
Acquired in the 19th century. Ex Jeger collection, Switzerland. UK gallery, early 2000s.
These small fragments, for analogies with the fragments of Pompeii, seem to belong to the second style of Roman painting, red panels representing highlight and shadow, decorated with vegetal interlaces. A red grenade fillet probably framed some panels. A fragment shows alternate blue and red colours over a cream background, maybe pertinent to a socle. -

A 3rd-century A.D. opus interrasile ring featuring an expanding hoop with openwork volute scroll shoulders, set with a 2nd-century A.D. dextrarum iunctio nicolo intaglio showing an opposing man and a woman holding hands, the woman holding an ear of wheat, the male figure wearing a long military mantle hanging down his back; supplied with a museum-quality impression. 8.40 grams, 23.52 mm overall, 18.89 x 17.87 mm internal diameter (approximate size British Q, USA 8, Europe 17.49, Japan 16)
