Comprising a bulbous body with a dimple base and a funicular neck with an applied band below the rim and a handle to the rear.

FootnotesThe pitcher shows the style of production of the Roman Rhine workshops. Several hundred vessels with applied decoration are known from the Roman Rhineland. The numerous finds from graves and the evidence of glass furnaces in Cologne suggest that a large proportion of these vessels were produced in local workshops, then spread throughout the empire.

Substantial crossbow brooch with onion-knop finials and keeled bow with a hatched panel, a ribbed collar above the junction and a wide rectangular footplate with ring-and-dot motifs, pin and integral catchplate on the reverse. 87 grams, 96 mm

Roman Fresco Wall Plaster Collection

Fragments of wall plaster with rendered surface painted with mainly Pompeii red, pale blue, brown and white detailing; some with an impression of timber laths to the reverse. 953 grams total, 8.9-11.7 cm
Acquired in the 19th century. Ex Jeger collection, Switzerland. UK gallery, early 2000s.
These small fragments, for analogies with the fragments of Pompeii, seem to belong to the second style of Roman painting, red panels representing highlight and shadow, decorated with vegetal interlaces. A red grenade fillet probably framed some panels. A fragment shows alternate blue and red colours over a cream background, maybe pertinent to a socle.
