Roman Gold Foiled Glass with Inscription

Fragment of dark blue glass with applied gold-foil decoration: figural scene above a band of running scrolls; Greek script legend 'ЄΜΟΡΟΟΥ[...]'. 2.19 grams, 25 mm
From a European collection, 1970s.
The fragment has a shallow curvature as if it was once part of a large drinking vessel. The Greek text 'εμορο ογ' appears to be derived from the verb εἵμαρται 'to be fatal' or 'to be destined by fate', so '[it was] not fatal'. -
Roman Enamelled Bronze Mount
Late 1st-2nd century A.D.Sold for (Inc. bp): £65
Formed as a volute scroll with flared tail; the body filled with alternating bands of (originally) white and blue enamel, with central roundel above, tail with two further cells; suspension loop and stud to the reverse. 8.26 grams, 40 mm
From the collection of an London antiquarian, 1980s.
The form of the mount resembles early forms of Roman plate brooches, e.g. Hattatt's item 511 of the late 1st century A.D. -
Roman Lead Bag Seal with XXIII

Circular in shape with a rectangular tag to the reverse; stamped with XXIII for the 23rd Legion, which was formed in the summer of 49 BCE by Julius Caesar. 4.83 grams, 25 mm
