Roman 'ROMA' Openwork Brooch

2nd-3rd century AD

A bronze discoid plate brooch with openwork monogram 'ROMA', formed with three serifed capital letters, from left to right R, M and A, connecting to the frame; if read from right to left, the text may be rendered as Am(o)r; hinged pin and catchplate to the reverse. 12.6 grams, 31mm (1 1/4"). Fine condition.

Provenance
From the collection of a Surrey gentleman; acquired 1970-1980.
