RHENISH GLASS MULTIPLE-HANDLED BEAKER
4TH-5TH CENTURY AD
4 3/4" (174 grams, 12 cm).

A pale green beaker, conical in profile with applied trail base, eight hollow recurved lugs to the wall; Rhenish workmanship.

PROVENANCE:
Ex Pars antiques 1980s.

FOOTNOTES:
This late Roman form of glass drinking vessel may have originated in a representation of the club of Hercules with its stubbed branches. The design inspired the Rhenish glass manufacturers who produced the classic glass 'clawbeakers' of the 5th and 6th centuries found in Anglo-Saxon and Merovingian Frankish graves.
