Proto-Corinthian Painted Pottery Cup

7TH CENTURY B.C.

6 1/4 in. (74 grams, 16 cm wide).

Broadly conical in form, with rounded shoulder, inverted rim, two slender D-shaped handles and gently splayed foot; polychrome painted concentric bands to the inner and outer faces and geometric sunburst pattern around the foot; restored.

Provenance

Acquired in the 1960s-1970s.
Ex European private collection.

    This hilt was probably for an acinaces blade, usually 14-18 inches long and used throughout a vast swath of territory encompassing the eastern Mediterranean, the Near East and central Asia, by such diverse cultures as the Parthians, the Medes, the Greeks, and the Scythians.
