PRINCE EDWARD (ABDICATED KING EDWARD VIII) HANDWRITTEN HORSE RACING LETTER AND ENCLOSED PHOTOGRAPH
DATED 1927 A.D.
4 1/2 x 3 3/8 - 8 x 5 in. (14 grams total, 11.5 x 8.7 - 20.5 x 12.7 cm).

A two leaf (four sided) letter handwritten by Prince Edward (later king Edward VIII) on St. James's Palace letterheaded paper, accompanied by a photograph referred to in the letter showing the prince being led on horseback at a race; the letter is dated 28.3.27 and reads: 'Dear Lord Manners / Thank you / very much for your kind letter of congratulations on winning your cup - / I can assure you that I'm very proud / indeed to have won the Grenadiers' / race after 3 previous / attempts - I had / a very nice ride / round the Bicester / Pt to Pt course / the other day & the / going wasn't as / heavy as expected - / I'm sorry you weren't / able to attend the / meeting but I had / the pleasure of / seeing your daughter / there - I am sending / you a picture or / two of the race / which may amuse / you. Hoping you / are having a pleasant / stay in the South / Yours sincerely / Edward P'. [3]

Edward Prince of Wales reigned January-December 1936. He abdicated the throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, who as a twice divorced woman would never have been acceptable as Queen.
