Pre-Columbian Stone Ritual Vessel
1ST MILLENNIUM A.D.
4 3/4 in. (1.58 kg, 12 cm).
Rectangular in plan and tapering in profile from the rounded rim to the segmented basal ring, vertical lobes to each long face, one with pouring vent. [No Reserve]

From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000.
From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

During the late pre classic period in Mexico, the region of Guerrero produced many abstract figures in stone. This example with arms crossed and facial features displayed shows some elements of the Chontal culture who lived in the same region.
