Pre-Columbian Stone Ritual Vessel

1ST MILLENNIUM A.D.

4 3/4 in. (1.58 kg, 12 cm).

Rectangular in plan and tapering in profile from the rounded rim to the segmented basal ring, vertical lobes to each long face, one with pouring vent. [No Reserve]

Provenance

From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000.
From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

Footnotes

Possibly a mortar for the preparation of seeds and grain, or a press for extracting fermented juice from fruit.
