Pre-Columbian Chupicuaro Painted Terracotta Bowl
PRE-CLASSIC PERIOD, 3RD CENTURY B.C.-3RD CENTURY A.D.
6 3/8 in. (470 grams, 16.3 cm).
With rounded underside, single red painted band to the inner rim and another to the outer equator, band of painted black saltires above. [No Reserve]

This is a very classical mask from the early city of Teotihuacan. Such masks were crafted within the city state and surrounds and are considered to have been produced for ceremonial purposes. Larger examples are thought to have been attached to larger wooden structures. This example forms part of a smaller sub set of Teotihuacan masks and has been sensitively carved showing ancient surface wear. -
