Post Medieval Gold Ring with Carnelian Gemstone Depicting the Roman God Neptune

1 1/4 in. (15.19 grams, 31.43 mm overall, 19.60 mm internal diameter (approximate size British R, USA 8 1/2, Europe 18 3/4, Japan 18)).
Depicting Neptune advancing nude from a scallop shell, holding a trident in one hand and pointing with the other; billowing banner to his rear; supplied with a museum-quality impression.

Throughout Europe, and far beyond, talented gem-cutters were at work in the 19th century. Neptune was appreciated by Neoclassical cutters, as shown by a carnelian gemstone with the profile of Neptune, his face serene amidst a storm, by the American engraver George Hewitt Cushman (1814-1876).

Finger rings with a principal stone and subsidiary settings in separate collets came into use in the early 13th century, and this form of simple collet continued in use until the 15th century. A gold medieval finger ring with a similar bezel, but with subsidiary settings, is recorded on the PAS database (LIN-EC74C7, 2020T819). Other gold finger rings with a principal stone (albeit with subsidiary settings) and similar framed bezel recorded as treasure on the PAS database, including one from Soberton, Hampshire (HAMP-1DCFF0, 2017T156) and Huntingdon district area, CAM-4A8AB6, 2020T089. -

The memento mori jewellery of the 16th and 17th centuries served as wearable ‘reminders of mortality’. Typical motifs within this genre included skulls, skeletons, crossbones, hourglasses, coffins, the gravedigger’s pick and shovel, and various other emblems of death and decay. -
