Post Medieval Gilt and Painted Wooden Cherub Pair
GERMANY, 17TH CENTURY A.D.
29 1/8 - 30 in. (74-76 cm high).
A pair of naturalistically modelled cherubs shown naked and chubby with infant bodies and mature heads, perched with one crossed leg atop grotesque heads- that of the Devil and a pug, each dynamically posed as though playing an instrument or holding a bowl; with polychrome paint and gilding; Baroque; on octagonal plinth bases. [2]

The statue copies a Roman copy of a famous type created in the school of the Greek sculptor Praxiteles in the 4th century B.C. Villa de Papiri. A similar copy exists in the collection of the British Museum, London, under accession no. 1864,1021.1. -
