POST MEDIEVAL GEORGIAN MARBLE RITUAL PROCESSION PANEL
18TH CENTURY AD
23 1/4" (23 kg, 59 cm).

A carved marble figural architectural plaque, one of the central elements of a large and important chimney breast, with chamfered rear edges depicting Maenads in a Bacchic procession, the rear figure with vessel and a naked child behind.

PROVENANCE:
Found Folkestone Road, Walthamstow, 1976, while excavating for fence posts by vendor's father. Published in the Guardian 19th November 1976 and exhibited in Walthamstow's Vestry House Museum in the 1970s.
