Post Classical Gemstone with Magical Inscription

1 3/8 in. (7.92 grams, 34 mm).
Oval variegated dark green intaglio featuring goddess Hekate represented triple-bodied and holding whips and branches, each head wearing a modius, inscription below and seven stars surrounding; the reverse with a magical inscription above a crescent moon and three stars.

LiteratureSee The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, accession no.42.874, for a Graeco-Roman gem showing a similar motif of Hekate.
FootnotesHekate was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy. She received her power over heaven, earth, and sea from her parents, the Titans Perses and Asteria.

The icon features meticulous craftsmanship typical of Orthodox iconography. The icon features meticulous craftsmanship typical of Orthodox iconography. Saint Antipas was popularly held to be a healer of tooth problems. He was martyred by being burned in a brazen bull-shaped altar under the Emperor Nero or Domitian.
