Saint Nicholas lived in 4th century A.D. and was the bishop of Myra, in the Roman Asia Minor. Because of the many miracles attributed to his work, his cult was widespread in the Orthodox world and he is known as Nicholas the wonderworker. His reputation as a secret gift-giver (such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them outside, or the dowry given to three maidens saving them from prostitution) created a model for Santa Claus. The veneration of the saint, who participated in the Council of Nicaea of 325 A.D., began very soon after his death.

Painted on a wooden board with gessoed surface, detailed scene of Christ beside an open tomb and Lazarus arising from his coffin, surrounded by onlookers in a landscape; red legend to upper edge 'HEΓ[EPCIC TOY] ΛAZA[POY]; edges chipped and worn. 2.3 kg, 37 x 45 cm

The scene is depicted in traditional composition, Christ standing opposite the figure of Lazarus in his sarcophagus. Three groups of figures bearing witness to the miracle. At Christ's feet are the prostrate figures of Mary and Martha. Behind him are the Apostles, the people of Bethany and Jerusalem, watching while servants are delivering Lazarus from his bands.
