Philistia, Gaza ('Azah) AR Drachm. Mid 5th century-333 BC.

Imitating Athens. Head of Athena with profile eye to right, wearing disc earring, pearl necklace and a crested Attic helmet adorned with three olive leaves and a pi-style palmette / ΑΘΕ, owl standing to right, head facing the viewer, olive sprig and 'ayin to left; all within incuse square. Gitler & Tal V.10D; Fischer-Bossert, Notes 13. Very Fine.(2.83gr, 14mm, 10h.).

    Very Fine. Apparently unpublished and possibly unique.

    The fact that the present coin has the same reverse stellate pattern as the Diobols of Miletos (cf. SNG Kayhan I 462-75 and SNG Copenhagen 953) and some of the silver coins of the satraps of Caria (cf. HN Online 2926), leads us to attribute its origin to one of these two regions.
