Lydo-Milesian standard. Sardes or subsidiary mint. Type IV (middle) B. Persian king or hero, wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance to right, holding dagger in right hand, bow in left / Oblong incuse punch with uncertain design (scarab?); countermarks: 48? (rim) and unlisted. Carradice Type IV, Group B; BMC Arabia pl. XXVI, 17; for another example with similar reverse design cf. Leu Numismatik, Web 31, 704. Near Very Fine.(5.42gr, 15mm.).

C. Julius Eurykles led Spartan ships to join Octavian at the battle of Actium and was later awarded Roman citizenship and the title of 'hegemon' of the Spartans following the victory. His distinction by the emperor Augustus was not the only benefit from his involvement in the battle. In defeating Antony, Eurykles avenged his father, Lachares, whom Antony had executed.
