NASA launched the satellite for the 56-nation International Telecommunication Satellite Consortium. The new commercial communications satellite will be placed into a stationary orbit above the Atlantic Ocean and will relay telephone, television, teletype and facsimile transmissions between North America and Europe. It also will provide communications support for NASA's Apollo lunar landing program. Two previous Intelsat satellites linked the United States mainland with the Pacific, the new one joins Early Bird, the world's first commercial communications satellite over the Atlantic; Saturn V rocket ready for lift-off, endorsed 'John F. Banded Agate Intaglio Depicting Perseus and Andromeda in Gold Pendant

Translucent banded agate intaglio featuring a dynamic mythological scene of Perseus rescuing Princess Andromeda; Perseus depicted nude and wearing a crested helmet, holding a round shield with a Medusa mask in his hand and a spear in the other, Andromeda standing behind him and dressed in long flowing robes; set in an elaborate late 18th-century English gold frame; supplied with a museum-quality impression. 13.64 grams, 61 mm

Andromeda was the daughter of the Aethiopian king Cepheus and Cassiopeia. According to the legend, Cassiopeia angered Neptune by claiming that her daughter was more beautiful than the nereids, and Neptune, in revenge, sent a monster to ravage the coast. Told that the only way to save their country is to sacrifice their daughter to the creature, Andromeda’s parents chained her to a rock by the sea. The demigod Perseus, son of Jupiter, killed the sea monster by petrifying it with the head of Medusa and rescued Andromeda. -

Rectangular slab with raised border and high-relief scene; three standing females wearing floor-length draped and tiered robes, holding hands; the left figure with right hand extended slightly, holding out the folds of her robe, head turned back towards the middle figure whose hand she holds; middle figure facing with diadem in her neatly dressed hair, holding the extended hand of the third figure holding the hem of her robe and angled stiffly away from the others. 145 kg total including stand, 106.5 cm wide

A group of three young females is often interpreted as the Three Graces. However, in classical art, these three figures usually stand close together and are nude or sparsely clothed - unlike the females in this carving. Groups of three goddesses - such as Persephone, Demeter and Hekate - may denote the phases of the moon or, more broadly, the three phases of a female life as maiden / mother/ elder. The scene bears some resemblance to the 1st century AD relief of 'Three dancing nymphs' in Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California; however, that has a more exuberant and lively air contrasted with the rigid formality of the piece. -
