Norman Period Bronze Ring with Dragon Walking Right

CIRCA 11TH-12TH CENTURY A.D.

3/4 in. (2.27 grams, 21.68 mm overall, 19.03 mm internal diameter (approximate size British Q, USA 8, Europe 17.49, Japan 16)).

The slender hoop with slightly expanded shoulders, sub-rectangular bezel engraved with a stylised standing dragon. [No Reserve]

    A rowel spur in this group, undecorated and with deeply curved side arms suggest a 13th-14th century dating. Spurs were not just worn when riding, but more generally as a mark of status and could also be highly decorated.

    Composed of a range of mainly glazed vessels, including tripod pots, a stoneware jars and a footed pouring bowl; most with chips and cracks. 3.25 kg total, 10-21 cm

    Ceramics from Dundee, Scotland, confirm that the most common vessel type represented was the tripod pipkin, with globular body, rounded base, three legs and a single handle.
