Western Asiatic Neo-Assyrian Cylinder Seal with Hero

10th-7th century BC

A brown rhyolite cylinder seal; drilled vertically for suspension; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a typed and signed scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'The design shows a hero on one knee holding in each hand the front paw of a rearing horned quadruped with head turned backwards. A star forms a terminal. This is a seal in the Neo-Assyrian linear style, but perhaps from Syria rather than from Assyria itself. It is nicely engraved, but the surface is worn. The seal dates to c. 900-700 B.C.' 6.5 grams, 23mm (1"). Fine condition.

The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number R-407; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; and accompanied by a copy of a typed and signed scholarly note by the Professor.
