MEDIEVAL NATIVITY RELIQUARY PENDANT
(Gold, 10.68 grams, 46.7 mm.).

Circa 15th century. A rare sapphire-mounted reliquary pendant of hexagonal section; the back missing; finely engraved with the Nativity scene, the Trinity above, formerly enamelled; the suspension loop with cabochon sapphire set in a square claw collet; the sides inscribed in black letter script 'me tibi virgo pia genetrix [...]ista Maria'.

PROVENANCE:
Ex Sotheby's 9th December 2005, lot 5, ex Michael Estrick collection, with extract from the Sotheby's sale.
