Nabataea, Aretas IV, with Shaqilat AE 14mm. Struck circa AD 17/8-39/40. Petra mint.
Aretas, in military attire, standing facing, head to left, holding spear and sword; palm frond to left, [het (in Nabataean) to upper right] / Shaqilat, veiled, standing to left, raising hand; wreath to left. CN 187d; cf. Meshorer, Nabataea 97. Near Very Fine.(2.70gr, 14mm, 12h.).

It has been suggested that such Greek lead test strikes were made by itinerant engravers in an effort to sell their services to cities that produced coins, much like modern coin patterns, which are made by artists to help officials visualise a coin before it is approved for production. -
